Refurbished Mahjong Table
by Les Succari
Every Chinese New Year, every kid is familiar with the clicking and clacking sounds of Mahjong Tiles being shuffled across the table; aunties and uncles sharing stories while catching up, the loud whoop from Grandma being as lively as ever as she sweeps up the winning pot.
Such is the typical Chinese New Year tradition we hope to preserve for years to come.
That's why we were truly delighted to bring new life to this 60-year old Mahjong Table. Passed down from generations before, the owner of this piece wanted to preserve this old table and have it refurbished. This table originally had no drawers, and the Formica Top was damaged by a previous water kettle incident.
This piece was carefully crafted using dovetail joinery for the new drawers, and constructed from Meranti Wood, a perfect complement to the table made of Merbau Wood. The top has been completely refurbished, wrapped with bent wood to preserve the edges.
Finally, a full makeover was done by sanding it down and adding a new coat of clear matte lacquer, ready and in time for the New Year!
We hope this Mahjong Table lives to see another 100 years, with more tales to tell every Chinese New Year.
